Praveen Pradeep

History & Profile

Dr. Praveen is an Associate Professor of Healthcare Management at the Goa Institute of Management. He holds a PhD in diabetes epidemiology from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and completed a postdoctoral program in implementation science at Emory University, Atlanta, USA. With a career spanning more than a decade at the national level, Dr. Praveen's research has focused particularly on the prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases. During his tenure at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Praveen was pivotal in establishing and coordinating India's national registry of young-onset diabetes (YDR). His leadership and dedication led to the execution of several ancillary studies in the YDR registry focusing on the prevention of diabetic complications, harmonization of international diabetes registries, and the development of screening models for diabetic retinopathy. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence (CARE) in young diabetes, funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research, furthering translational research aimed at enhancing diabetes care. Dr. Praveen's research extends beyond academia into practical applications, with collaborations that include working with industry giants like Google LLC to validate deep learning algorithms for diabetic retinopathy screening. He was also part of a research team that developed the first pediatric-to-adult transition care program for diabetes care in India. He has 29 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with 19 in Q1 journals (cited more than 600 times with an H-index of 15). Additionally, he has presented papers at several international conferences and was an invited speaker at the prestigious American Diabetes Association annual conference in 2021. He also underwent visiting fellowships at the Colorado School of Public Health, USA; Cambridge University, UK; São Paulo Research Foundation, Brazil; and the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, Australia. He is a recipient of the ICMR travel grant, the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) travel grant, and the US-NIH Fogarty research training fellowship. In 2021, he was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
